Youth is a toaster with a very
individual style. He chants over DUB music
just like all Reggae MC's or Deejay, but he
does it in a semi-melodic way. In this clip,
he performs on the Jamaican Reggae Sunsplash
festival. The year is 1982, and the music is
cool.
As you may or may not know, toasting
usually happens over DUB music. The MC's at
the Sound Systems voiced over the B-sides of
7 inch singles. To do such a thing live,
requires a band that can play at least a
dubbish feel. The band in this clip takes it
easy, they have long parts of stricktly drum
and bass with a few sounds on top of it,
like a soft guitar lick.
Someone on the mixing table could have
added some nice echo's, but that didn't
happen unfortunately. Still, this is a nice
one to look at. Ten Against One is one of
Big Youth's better known tunes, and this
performance does reveal the beauty of that
particular tune.
