| The
time is the late 1970's. Dub mixing was already
applied to spice up the riddim when the DJ
was chanting on top of it, but the singers
would also come and sing on top of what
others would recognize as a Dub.
It was the birth of early Dancehall, or
Rub a Dub music.
Enter Sugar Minott. This gifted singer is
widely considered to be the godfather of Rub
a Dub. His smooth voice would out-do
any famous pop-singer at any give time, but
Sugar is also widely known to be kind of
really conscious too. He is known to have
rejected many contracts that would have
disabled him from helping out his fellow
Jamaicans, for example through his sound
system the Youthman Promotion.
Sugar has voiced thousands of lover's
tunes, but he will always sing about topics
that matter otherwise, too. He will sing
about Jesus (Jah), he will sing about social
circumstances too. And he is not afraid to
chant down Babylon right there where this
should be done.
What to say about singing the truth about
herb, or ganja? In some places on the
planet, it is stricktly forbidden to take a
little bit from the herb, even though it is
simply a dried plant. While Babylon ships in
the cokane, the herbman has to hustle
to make a living, to stay out of trouble.
So take a look to this video, with all
the above in mind.
