Reggae music, we speak about
"riddims" rather than
"songs". Studio Bands play the
music into the multi-track recorder, and
singers will come, DUB engineers, and they
will do things with the multitrack
recording.
Sometimes, different singers will use the
same riddim, the same recording even, and
sing a totally different lyric in a totally
different melody.
And we will see just exactly that in this
video.
It's a promotional video for the Blood
and Fire release "Fisherman
Style", wherein several generations of
Reggae vocalists voice on the
"Fisherman Riddim", a riddim
recorded in Lee Perry's Black Ark Studio for
the vocal group the Congo's.
The original recording was processed in
Berlin by the Rhythm and Sound Crew, but not
before the vocal parts were recorded, mostly
in Jamaica. What we see in this video, shot
in Jamaica by Cedric Myton from the Congo's,
are scenes from the recording session.
